Mintmarks Lunar's & Kangaroo's Help

I have a 1oz lunar silver rabbit & was wondering why it has P100 on the front & has some dots around the rim of the coin. After a bit of searching I came across this site but I'm unsure of how accurate the details are. It also seems that the dragon has them too. My coin did not come in a box as shown on the following site.

http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-...r/silv1oz2.htm

Being new to all this can someone explain to me in the column Brilliant
Uncirc. under rabbit it says 23 & in the Proof column it says 55, what does this mean?

When I click on the rabbit
http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-...r/1999l1oz.htm there are some boxes at the bottom 2002 then under specimen (I don't know what this means?) says 53 & Proof box says 60. Does anyone know what this means, as I'm confused? The numbers above don't match in the proof column on each page, but I don't know if they are supposed to. :confused_m:

This also then got me thinking I have some kangaroo's that have a letter "c" on them some came without a card & some did. I haven't checked yet if they all have the letter "c" on them or if they should have or just certain years did or only proofs any ideas?

After looking here

http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-...r/19981ski.htm

I am now wondering how do you tell if you have a proof coin, if it does not come in a case or packaging based on their proof numbers it says 10,422 but in the write up it says 5,000 proofs in cases 15,000 without packaging!

Now I'm sure there is a bright spark :D on here that can explain some of this to a newbie.

Does anyone know where you can get the mintages on Proof lunars & was the rabbit & the dragon the only plain silver proofs issued?

100P is the mint-mark for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Perth Mint.
P is the mint-mark for proof. If your lunar doesn't have a P then it's uncirculated.
$A23 was the issued price for uncirculated rabbits and $A55 was for proofs
Proofs were issued for every year. Proof mintage for Dragon is 2,500 ....Rabbit is 4000
--------------------------------------------------------------
The C on the Skippy dollars is the mint-mark for the Canberra Mint
Proofs were not released until 1998 and it's been an annual affair since.
The uncirculated Skippy dollars are made to a high standard but with a bit of training it's not that difficult to tell them apart from a proof coin.
Hope that helps
Cheers

Hi AeL

Thanks for the info I didn't know they did plain proofs for the other lunars eg thought the proofs were just on the coloured lunars. I Am chuffed I have a proof Rabbit :D didn't notice the difference as I only have 1 at 1oz & nothing to compare. I don't think the seller realises they are proof as they were being sold at the same price as regular lunars, so I got a bargain. Just ordered some more & will wait & see if they have a P100 on them.

Found this http://rscott.org/bullion/austluns.htm it only goes up to a snake but doesn't identify what the proof mark looks like. Do you know what to look out for on the other lunar coins or do you have a site link to find the information?

Will now have to check my others to see if they are proofs or not. :D

Sorry Jellylegs ....Maybe I didn't make myself clear.
100P is the mint-mark that represents the 100th birthday of the Perth Mint
It's on both the uncirculated and proof coins that the Perth Mint issued in 1999
P is the mint-mark that the Perth Mint uses for their proofs.
If you are not sure whether your coin is proof or uncirculated; post an actual pic of your coin on this tread and I should be able to tell you.
It is especially easy to tell with Kooks as the uncirculated and proofs of the same year usually have different reverses.
Some of the later Skippy dollars are a little harder to differentiate as the uncirculated has a frosted reverse finish that at a quick glance looks like a proof.
Personally I prefer this uncirculated version to the proofs. I wouldn't pay double for the privilege.

Re: Mintmarks Lunar's & Kangaroo's Help

AeL I later realised what you meant :banghead: so will have to check my coins after the holidays. But in the meantime I was searching for some photo's to see if I could get a clearer picture & came across this site with some photo's of proofs.
http://www.jaggards.com.au/shop/prod...&categoryid=70

Not knowing all the technical names yet for front & back of coins (for some reason it's not sinking in) between obverse & the other side which can't recall at the minute without checking.

From this site it appears the raised animal picture should be frosted & the background shiny or like a mirror with a 'P' at the bottom for proofs & the pig looks like a slightly different kind of pig. :D Unfortunately I haven't got my camera set up & haven't learned how to download photo's on here at the minute. So I am guessing that the rabbit may have 2 'P's on it if it follows the others on this site? :dontknow:

I agree about the proofs I wouldn't purposely go & buy a proof as I think I can get 2 coins for the price of 1, more silver the name of the game in my book for your money. Yet some (maybe I should say loads of them) of these dam coins are so pretty it is really addictive.

I will have to look at the skippy's as I have a selection of 1990's & just a couple that have come with a card & 1 I did buy as a proof as I liked the design & couldn't find an uncirculated coin. So haven't worked out yet how to see if they are proof's or not yet. I guess this just adds more interest to this hobby/investing.

But any help to discover if the skippy's are uncirculated or proofs or how to tell the difference would be appreciated but I will keep scouring the net for indicators.

Will have to investigate my kangaroo's further.

The ugly side (The Queen)is the obverse:D
The reverse is the one showing an image of the rabbit, kook or skippy.
Most of these internet sites gives very limited info or are out of date.
Unless you are willing to invest around $30 for a catalogue; its probably easier asking for information on this forum
I don't always check all the posts here so PM me that you have some questions and I will come over and post on your thread.
